Can I Spray Petroleum Oil-Based Chemicals?

Modified on Thu, 9 Jul at 2:42 PM

Certain pesticide formulations can have a significant impact on the performance and lifespan of electric sprayers. If you are using emulsified concentrates (ECs) that contain petroleum oil distillates, please review the information below.

Petroleum oil distillates are known to be particularly harsh on the components commonly used in electric diaphragm sprayers. Repeated exposure may contribute to premature wear of pumps, seals, internal plumbing, and electronic components and void your sprayer's warranty.

This is not unique to FlowZone® sprayers. Similar challenges can affect electric sprayers across the industry, regardless of manufacturer.

Using Petroleum Oil Distillates

While customers may choose to use products containing petroleum oil distillates, doing so can increase wear on the sprayer's internal components and may reduce the overall service life of the pump.

If you intend to continue using petroleum oil-based emulsified concentrates, we strongly recommend following the cleaning procedure below after every day of use.

Recommended Cleaning Procedure

  1. Empty any remaining chemical from the tank.
  2. Fill the tank with warm, soapy water.
  3. Agitate and circulate the cleaning solution through the sprayer.
  4. Completely drain the system.
  5. Repeat the process a total of three times (triple rinse).
  6. Allow the sprayer to dry before storage.

Please note: Even with proper cleaning procedures, continuous use of petroleum oil-based products may still shorten the lifespan of the pump and other internal components.

Alternative Chemical Recommendations

FlowZone® does not manufacture or sell chemical products and therefore cannot recommend specific pesticide alternatives or substitutes.

For guidance regarding chemical selection, compatibility, application requirements, or alternative formulations, please consult:

  • The chemical manufacturer's label and technical documentation.
  • Your chemical supplier or distributor.
  • A licensed pest management professional.
  • Local agricultural or extension resources.

Best Practices for Maximum Sprayer Life

Proper cleaning and maintenance are the best ways to maximize the performance and lifespan of your electric sprayer. In addition:

  • Follow all chemical label instructions.
  • Rinse your sprayer thoroughly after each use.
  • Triple-rinse after using petroleum oil-based or emulsified concentrate products.
  • Never store chemicals in the tank for extended periods.
  • Inspect seals, filters, and hoses regularly.
  • Store the sprayer clean and dry between applications.
